With 24 years of experience in financial markets, I bring a distinctive blend of technical and strategic expertise to the table. CivicScience is a real-time consumer insights platform that historically has worked with corporates and is now expanding into financial services alt data. Also, the board does not have many representatives from product and data science, so this functional expertise would also provide more board depth. We are new FISD members, but excited about the potential.

Joe Galarneau, our primary representative, is a longtime data executive who previously led martech product at Wayfair, which included their data offerings. He also brings deep startup community experience to the role, as he is a CEO/founder of a data SaaS company with a successful exit and entrepreneur-in-residence for NYC’s largest startup accelerator. He is a serial chief product and technology officer at several other companies, as well as a former practice lead at KPMG Consulting. LinkedIn profile: https://www.linkedin.com/in/galarneau/

Kelly Kilgour, our second representative, is a seasoned data scientist with a background in consumer data, healthcare, and e-commerce, as well as experience working at the Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie Mellon, a premier computer science thinktank. Objectives for the FISD Executive Committee

  1. Expand Adoption and Drive Innovation: Grow FISD’s reach by encouraging greater participation from organisations across the market data community. This involves a data-led approach to enhance events, improve post-event materials, and member research and feedback. We aim to introduce more thought leadership talks from industry-aligned players ahead of the capital markets in technology adoption and implement improved networking strategies. These efforts aim to keep FISD events at the forefront of capital markets.
  2. Implement Technology for Better Engagement: At the centre of our approach, CJC seeks to leverage innovative, data-focused technologies during FISD events and throughout member engagement. This will help drive meaningful events and post-event follow-ups, ensuring discussions translate into actionable outcomes and ongoing collaboration.

3.            Enhance Revenue and ROI: Focus on strategies that deliver measurable value to FISD members, increasing engagement and creating a stronger return on investment for all participants. FISD can further derive revenue beyond membership through regional, event-based fee-liable activities, collateral, and other initiatives, creating additional opportunities for growth and impact.

New Candidate

Mark Schaedel, CEO | Mark Bird, Cofounder

As capital markets evolve from transactions to data as their primary business activity, the role of FISD becomes increasingly critical. There is currently no other trade body focused on the business of data. Regardless of the constituency group, our common interests lie in how the commercial framework for data best supports the needs of the industry. Given the advances in how data is consumed and used commercially today, there are many opportunities for improvements in the commercial practices we rely on, many of which were developed decades ago and amended through a patchwork of changes adopted incrementally by the industry.

Over the years, we have observed FISD increasingly calcify around consumer cost in a somewhat myopic way. While managing cost is a legitimate and necessary priority, as a singular focus, it stifles innovation and detracts from the broader potential to unlock value and create a more efficient and sustainable business.

We are resubmitting our nominations for the Executive Committee; however, the value of our time and contributions relies on FISD’s willingness to embrace change and accept the entirety of the market data ecosystem as its base.

For this purpose, we do not believe that constituent groups serve our goals and propose replacing these groups with dynamic, interest-based groups focused on specific areas of innovation and growth. At DataBP, for example, we do not consider ourselves aligned with the vendor constituency group, which broadly spans commercial data redistributors, fintechs, and technology providers under one umbrella. This construct fails to reflect the diverse interests and priorities of these members. A similar observation can be made about the exchanges, considering the diversity of interests and the emergence of digital assets and multi-asset platforms. Additionally, we feel the index community deserves a role within FISD and is currently absent from the table.

Consumer group members are likely the best aligned but already have alternatives like IPUG and Cossium. For procurement professionals who participate in this group, market data is merely one facet of their remit. For the rest of the market data industry, FISD has the unique potential to become an organization centered on the business of data, fostering innovation as its core mission. This collective mission, combined with business interest-focused groups, could address critical challenges and opportunities, such as:

  1. Data Licensing Innovation
  2. Approvals, Reporting, Compliance, and the Commercial Administrative Framework
  3. Distribution and Data Governance
  4. Derived Data, Analytics, Benchmarks, and Index Use
  5. Price Quality, Information Value, Transparency, and Fragmentation
  6. Regulatory Frameworks, Changes, and Disconnects + advice for consolidated tapes

These are just a few examples, but the focus should be on forward-looking topics requiring a mix of engineers, content experts, and administrators from across consumers, vendors, and exchanges. In our experience, standards-focused initiatives often do not produce results; however, de facto standards, which are inadvertently created through the convergence on common business processes, have proven successful.

We are committed to dedicating time and energy to promoting innovation in our industry and collaborating on a progressive agenda for FISD. Thank you for considering our nominations. We look forward to working with FISD leadership to drive meaningful progress in the market data industry.

During his tenure he surpassed his sales targets by over 140% in 2006 and 160% the following year.

Armed with a rare depth and breadth of experience, Patrick returned to Rimes in 2008 and remains there today. Starting as a product manager, Patrick has been responsible for several new initiatives, including innovative feed-based and data management solutions. In 2013 Patrick was appointed Global Head of Content Management, EVP, and eleven years on, he thoroughly enjoys the range and diversity this role provides. During his time at Rimes, Patrick has cultivated over 900 new information provider relationships and is responsible for bringing on an average of 70 new providers each year. He has grown Rimes’ data coverage catalogue by over 1000%.  Focusing on end-of-day data and its uses in the buy-side community, its safe to assume there is not an index licence out in the market place that Patrick has not reviewed.

His team serves as the conduit between Rimes’ clients and the data providers. The information providers rely on Rimes to be a ‘single voice’ of feedback informed by deep industry knowledge, which they all acknowledge is extremely valuable. His team has built strong trust with information owners for handling their property and respective downstream control and data compliance. Patrick’s leadership has also been instrumental in his team consistently scoring highly in internal employment engagement surveys. He champions internal ESG values, with a particular emphasis on strong Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) principles.

Patrick has built the Rimes Market Data function from the ground up and prides himself on setting the gold standard for data management. He is responsible for legal, compliance, end customer entitlement, reporting, audit and oversight for all market data licences. Patrick is keenly aware that the rising cost of data is immense, and as new technologies emerge, data providers are continually finding ways to charge more. He also recognizes that the impact of ever-increasing regulation and its inherent complexities further increases the cost burden while acknowledging that information providers face significant costs to keep up with market trends, innovate, and produce new data solutions.

Patrick is ideally suited to be part of the FISD Executive Committee as he brings an unusual blend of expert insight underpinned by practical experience of the financial information landscape. His core values are integrity, fairness and honesty, and as the industry looks to leverage new technologies and data types, his wisdom, refreshing approach and hard-earned experience will be invaluable.
