A US perspective on ESG and associated data challenges

In case you had not noticed there is a difference between Europe and North America. The EU and especially France make reporting ESG credentials a VERY high priority. Climate change as represented by the E in ESG has a more nuanced profile and priority on this side of the pond. Many North American private and institutional investors do strive for data points to satisfy their desire for responsible and sustainable investing. However, concerns have been raised, including by the SEC, that this rapacious appetite for data is putting a strain on the overall market – especially on the corporates who have to provide this data. That strain is caused in no small part by the lack of standardisation of approach. But what should standardisation look like? – The problem is exacerbated by the competing standards that are being presented. What is the ‘right’ data? Who decides what is ‘right’?
