First market data vendors, now FX venues: how will acquisitions affect the market data and trading landscape?

ICE acquired Interactive Data.  CME acquired NEX. Cboe acquired HotSpot. LSE acquired FTSE and Russell. Blackstone acquired Thomson Reuters' Risk & Financial business, but it looks as if Refinitiv will wind up in the hands of "an exchange". Big moves on the global chess board. How does this affect Asia, and the market data industry?

  • How will Asian exchanges / OTC assets contend with this consolidation:
    • Will regional exchanges consider consolidation: with other regional exchanges or global groups?
    • Could we see different strategies i.e. ASX’s investments in YieldBroker; SGX’s acquisition of BidFX?
  • How will this affect the development of regional FX (NDFs?) / OTC trading? Could “old school” (voice) benefit?
  • Will the market data business change?
  • Will a FAANG/BAT tech company attempt to disrupt the process of price formation and trade matching?

Historical data: spoiled for choice, or horses for courses?

As the cost of storage decreases and there is focus on new trading opportunities with data science, there are probably more choices for historical data now than ever before. Do exchanges, consumer institutions and vendors (market data vendors, cloud vendors) share similar or diverging views on the perceived commercial value of historical data?

  • Will historical data increase in (perceived) value?
  • Will the choices for historical data platforms be a function of data science capabilities?
  • Do the current “NDU” policies effectively address data science experimentation and applications? Can we expect policies to be revised for “big data”?
