Session:
Deja vu - the yearning for standardisation in our market data industry
Standards for market data commercial policies and terminology has been a topic up for discussion for years, in fact decades. The cry from many a heart for this still echoes around market data conference halls (and the bars where market data folk gather after FISD events – do you remember those days). Einstein was quoted as saying “the definition of Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results”. Are we insane to talk again about standards for market data? Paraphrasing US President John F Kennedy - we as an industry choose to address market data standards “…not because they are easy, but because they are hard,….”
What exactly do we mean by ‘Standards’? Where and with whom could we meaningfully look to develop such ‘Standards’? Why has this been so difficult? Do standards undermine data owners’ competitive positions? Are they hard to do administratively? Are local laws an obstacle? Just one recent example - the EU has talked about standardised terms for exchange data; we at FISD have had discussions on Digital Rights Management (ODRL) – is that part of the solution? Where, as an industry, are we? – And where should we be aiming? – and what, thinking pragmatically, might stop us?
