Wrestling with Index Benchmark Data Licensing

The way commercials are applied for Index data licensing has evolved. One major shift has been the introduction of pricing based on Assets under Management (AUM). This started as a shared risk approach, but has resulted in significant price hikes, as Asset Management firms have increased the assets they have under management. The major and established Benchmark providers have also been very good at marketing their brands and creating positive client mandates. This presents a challenge for market data teams at consumer firms who are tasked with controlling the cost of Index data licensing. How is the supplier landscape changing in respect of new providers and concepts like self-indexing? How can market data teams take advantage of this new landscape? What could (should) market data teams be doing internally within their own firms to change behaviours upstream, in respect of decisions taken by their own investment teams and prompted by client mandates and external consultants. There are many layers to this issue –  let’s peel them back one by one.

Hunters and Gatherers: Sourcing Challenges for End Users Firms

This session will seek insight on how market data executives at end-user firms are dealing with a myriad of data sourcing challenges.  We will see how their internal customers’ expanding range of data needs (real-time data, reference data, index data, ratings data, and now “unstructured” data and alternative data) are increasing their workloads.  The panelists will provide insight on whether data budgets are growing, slowing, or remaining steady (and to what degree).  And we will explore how MiFID II implementation has impacted the menu of data options for consumers and if these changes are a negative or a positive (or a bit of both).  Perhaps most interestingly, we’ll seek insight on the plethora of interactions that occur between those that request data (e.g. traders, portfolio managers, analysts) and those among us who procure that data.
