Direct market access no more? The trade-offs and deployment models for pre-trade systems

Speed of response and latency are getting more and more important. But in today’s marketplaces there is an increased focus on risk management, specifically on pre-trade risk management for Sponsored Access and DMA. Venues, members and regulators have to – collectively – work towards a robust environment to avoid incidents that would introduce financial and reputational risk.  the panel will discuss:

  • What’s the risk/downside to required front-line defence systems?
  • How does this impact market data?  Does it create an opportunity for “technology arbitrage”?
  • Who are the system providers in this space? What’s the impact to latency?
  • Will members be allowed to deploy a preferred system; will the exchange step in with a required solution?

Matthew Hassan, Head, Platform Sales, Nomura Securities

New technologies and innovation in Japan: adopters, use cases, and challenges

We have been hearing about new big data applications and Robotic Process Analysis (RPA) in global markets. A recent Refinitiv survey highlighted the progress, usage and challenges faced by market participants. Japan was ominously absent from the survey. Has Japan been investing in resources and deploying new technologies for trading and data usage?

  • How aware is the Japan market of “big data” applications to identify new trading opportunities or to improve TCA? Is anybody using them?
  • Has Japan been investing in data science resources and development? What asset classes and business/operational areas?
  • Is it difficult for financial institutions – and vendors – to acquire (and keep) data science resources for trading businesses in Japan; is “Fintech” the competition?
