Alternative Data: An Essential Primer

Satellite imagery, sensors, social media and other mechanisms of communication and measurement are creating the ever-expanding pool of what is known as “alternative data”.  Quantitative funds are pioneers in this space, but experts argue that alternative data has the potential to give anyone with the right data sets and mechanisms for decoding its signals an edge.

This primer on alternative data will give an general overview of the landscape, including answers to such questions as: Why is alternative data “alternative”?  How is it sourced?  How is it harvested, valued, priced and sold?  What are the distribution mechanisms?  Are intermediaries necessary or is raw data consumable?  What makes it good or bad data and are the judgements different to traditional data? What challenges should consumers be prepared to encounter in developing an alternative data investment strategy?  How developed is the alternative data ecosystem?

Dan Connell of Greenwich Associates will give an overview of the industry and lead a panel of alternative data providers on the topic.

Panelists:

Pablo Cerrilla, Editor and Partnership/Business Development Lead, AlternativeData.org and YipitData

Bill Lee, FIA, Senior Market Data Advisor, Interactive Brokers
