Sponsorship Ideas for a Virtual Conference

By Ronn Levine Originally posted May 29. 2020 on SIPA

You’ve converted one of your premier events to a virtual event. How do you keep your sponsors? Do you adjust their pricing? Change the time period? Give more guarantees?

The Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University had their Collaborative Journalism Summit set for Charlotte, N.C. on May 14–15. Then, of course, they had to go virtual. “We let our sponsors know that several of their packages would have to change since we weren’t hosting in person,” they wrote on NiemanLab. “Every confirmed sponsor stuck with us, even our North Carolina-based sponsors—a testament to their commitment to collaborative journalism and knowledge sharing. The new sponsorship package included showing on-screen sponsor slides and messaging during the conference, and sharing links in the chat.”

But in the end, they said that if they do another virtual conference, they would do some things differently. “[We would] completely recreate sponsor packages. We mostly focused on converting the in-person components of our sponsor packages into virtual components this year. Next time, we’ll focus on fundamentally reimagining what sponsorship looks like in a 100-percent-virtual setting.”

Other ideas:

Position your sponsors differently. An ASAE article said that Instead of refunding conference sponsorship fees or transferring this year’s sponsorship to next year, organizations can benefit by finding new ways to position sponsors as supporting your audience. For example, sponsors could provide information to help your audience/members with challenges identified in recent surveys, issues related to changes in the marketplace, or new pain points as a result of the coronavirus.

Continue to connect buyers and sellers. “Why does someone buy into an event?” SIPA 2020 keynote speaker Krystle Kopacz asked. “I’ve been working with a couple clients—why does someone spend a ton of money to host a booth? They want to have face-to-face conversations with possible clients. So how does the lack of live events across the industry affect us? What does that do to lead generation efforts? And how are you refilling that pipeline? Publishers still have a key role to play between buyers and sellers. There are many ways you can mimic what live events do.”

Forfeit some revenue now for goodwill. “…There are brands that have done a good job of sticking up their hand to say, ‘We understand you, we’re with you, and we’re not trying to sell you anything right now, we just want to engage,'” said Steve Stoute, founder and CEO of Translation in a Fast Company article. “I think that’s the work that’s resonated the most for me. Brands with good intentions. They’re selling something at a discount that you need. They’re speaking to you in a way that seems empathetic to what you’re going through.”

Rebrand the sponsorship for a longer period. Identify the various ways to provide your conference sponsors with “replacement value” throughout the year. This could include podcast mentions, dissemination of thought leadership content, webinars, social media campaigns, outreach to a specific demographic of your members, promotion of each company’s webinars or seminars, and so forth.

Give more gravitas to the virtual event. The Center for Cooperative Media said that they were so successful in their conversion to the virtual event that they will keep an in-place component for future conferences. “We were able to include so many more people this year by hosting in place that we’re now thinking about making a live, interactive virtual conference a permanent part of the Summit for as long as the Summit exists.” They actually made their tickets free, but registration increased so much that more sponsors signed on.

Keep everything as is because these virtual events may be the future. Companies are actually starting to take advantage of the way we’re doing things now. Margaret Johnson, a partner and chief creative officer at Goodby Silverstein + Partners, said that for a Panera commercial, “We’re getting drivers to shoot themselves with their phones on their delivery routes, texting us the takes, then we’re texting back notes and direction on how to do it again differently. It all seems so foreign at first, but you quickly adapt. I believe the people who haven’t really embraced this new world will be in big trouble

CCPA Regulations Create a Gordian Knot: Either Comply with the Unconstitutional Restrictions or Risk Expensive Enforcement Actions, Says SIIA

Washington, D.C. (June 3, 2020) – The Software & Information Industry Association (SIIA), the principal trade association for software, information, digital content, and education technology industries, today issued a statement regarding the California Attorney General submitting the final regulations implementing the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) for approval to the California Office of Administrative Law.

SIIA President and CEO, Jeff Joseph, issued the following statement
:

“We appreciate the hard work and diligence the California Attorney General dedicated to drafting and consulting on the CCPA regulations. The final regulations, as submitted for approval to the Office of Administrative Law, include an important, common sense clarification to ensure the privacy of student data in the classroom by delineating which businesses qualify as service providers when under contract with a school district.

“We are disappointed, however, that the final regulations fail to clarify important compliance issues and fix the CCPA’s fatal First Amendment flaws with respect to information in the public domain.

“SIIA supports a national privacy standard that is robust, comprehensive, and flexible enough to balance innovation with privacy protections. But that value in privacy – whether state or federal – must be balanced against constitutional norms and requirements, including the First Amendment’s free speech guarantee. The CCPA and its final regulations fail this test.  As we brought to the attention of the California legislature and the Attorney General in multiple comments, the CCPA’s blanket regulation of non-governmentally sourced publicly available information unconstitutionally interferes with protected speech. Moreover, this regulatory overreach will suppress information for use in law enforcement investigations, investigative journalism, identity verification, scientific and medical research, corporate due diligence, finding missing persons, and the protection of our financial markets through ‘know your customer’ and anti-money laundering standards.

“The legislature failed to meet its constitutional and policy responsibilities when enacting the CCPA, but it gave the Attorney General the authority to remedy constitutional flaws through the rulemaking process. The failure to do so forces businesses to either comply with an unconstitutional regulatory requirement or risk expensive enforcement actions to vindicate their constitutional rights. This Gordian Knot is capricious, unfair, and unnecessary.

“The CCPA’s disregard for the First Amendment underscores the need for a preemptive federal solution to the data privacy question. SIIA will continue to work with policymakers on how we can ensure robust privacy protections without discarding our constitutional traditions.”

SIIA Restructures Education Technology (ETIN) Division

For Immediate Release: SIIA Contact: Michelle Harris, (202) 789- 4450 mharris@siia.net SIIA Restructures Education Technology (ETIN) Division Consolidating activities to strengthen focus on critical needs in EdTech Policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (June 16, 2020) – SIIA, the longtime leader in education technology policy, announces a major restructuring with their Education Technology (ETIN) Division. The division will more directly focus on the EdTech community’s most critical needs at the moment surrounding public policy, as the division moves away from in-person events.

“Effective July 1, 2020, our ETIN Education Division will be consolidated within our Public Policy Division,” said SIIA President Jeff Joseph, “Change is difficult but necessary and change can drive extraordinary outcomes. We have enjoyed a long and supportive relationship with the Education Technology community. We look forward to the next phase of this relationship as we leverage our core strengths in policy and advocacy to help grow this critical and exciting sector.”

Current SIIA education division members in good standing are invited to remain SIIA members through SIIA’s Education Policy Committee (EPC) at their current dues level. The EPC will continue to operate under the direction of Sara Kloek, focusing on issues important to SIIA’s EdTech members and the industry at large including protecting student and children’s privacy, education funding, closing the digital divide, distance learning policies, accessibility, and interoperability. SIIA also will continue to produce the EdTech industry’s leading and highly coveted EdTech CODiES Award program under the direction of SIIA Awards Director Jennifer Baranowski who has successfully coordinated the program for several years. At the same time, the association is terminating its standalone EdTech conferences and the majority of differentiated breakout content. “We also are exploring how best to continue the amazing work launched by our EdTech members around diversity, equity, and inclusion, which remains a priority for our organization. And we are exploring transitioning existing ETIN committees and communities to a virtual platform along with evaluating opportunities to continue to participate in and support key industry forums and specific project work,” said Joseph. “I want to thank Jill Abbott for her dedication, evangelism, and tremendous leadership,” Joseph added. “Jill helped create a compelling strategic vision for ETIN and has many successes of which to be proud, including most recently our Tech for Learners initiative. Jill has been a passionate champion for an increased focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion within the EdTech community and across our organization. We look forward to celebrating her soon. “I also want to thank the current ETIN Executive Committee, Board of Directors and the many volunteers who so unselfishly gave their time and expertise to support the division as well as the many great leaders who helped found and build the division.” Abbott will leave SIIA effective July 1. Sara Kloek will continue to lead SIIA’s EdTech-related public policy thought-leadership and advocacy efforts. SIIA’s Public Policy Division is led by SIIA Senior Vice President, Global Public Policy Carl Schonander.
